9) Utilities

Electricity, Gas, and Water

Proof of utility hook-up is a requirement for your closing. Even if the unit will be a rental, you must setup utility accounts while the unit is vacant and until a tenant moves - at that point, you would typically switch the utilities over to the tenant’s name.

For condos, the only utility required to be setup is electricity in most cases.

Note About Rental Guarantees

If you are in a rental guarantee by Truman Homes, the landlord is required to pay the utilities during the rental guarantee period.

Alberta Services Providers

In Alberta, you have the power to choose your electricity retailer and there are many providers you can choose from - click for a list of utility retailers.

You also will need to select the length of the service contract and between a fixed or variable rate contract. If you are renting the unit, consider a provider that does not charge you an account setup/cancellation fee.

Enmax is the most common provider, offers competitive rates, and you can sign-up online.
